11/18/2014
The Georgia Access to Care, Treatment and Services (ACTS) grant has been awarded to seven more organizations, this round totaling $400,000 in funds awarded and collected through the sale and renewal of the state’s Breast Cancer Awareness license tags. $600,000 was awarded in June to 10 organizations, and a Request for Proposals has just been issued for the next round, to be awarded in April 2015. The latest ACTS grant winners are West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition in Columbus; Grady Health Foundation, YWCA of Greater Atlanta, Boat People SOS, and Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services, Inc. in Atlanta; Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition in Rome; and St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah.
“This has been an amazing year to have been able to award grants to so many great organizations throughout Georgia in our collective fight against breast cancer,” said Georgia CORE Vice President Angie Patterson. “It is promising that this fund continues to grow and that worthy organizations are waiting in the wings to do good work with the grants.”
The purpose of the ACTS Grant program is to expand breast cancer education, screening, access, outreach and treatment services to people in the state of Georgia who are medically underserved. Starting in 2014, supplemental funds from the breast cancer license tag program have gone to administer genetic testing for those in need as well; 36 people have been tested to date with these funds.
“We were also able to allocate $48,000 to the Georgia Department of Public Health for the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention Program for underserved women,” said Patterson. “This is incredibly good news since many of these women are on waiting lists for mammograms, and the state has not been able to increase funding for BCCP.”
An additional $200,000 in funds is now available to non-profit organizations and public health agencies, to be distributed through an RFP process. Awards of up to $100,000 will be made for Treatment Service Projects and awards of up to $50,000 will be made for Education and Preventive Services Projects.
Complete applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm on December 19, 2014. Awards will be announced in April 2015. Please visit GeorgiaCancerInfo.org for more information and to apply.
